HBO’s Luck
I had to bail out on Deadwood at the end of the second season because it was just too depressing. John From Cincinnati was just dreadful. However, I decided to give David Milch a third chance by watching his latest HBO series Luck which provides an inside look at the horse racing business. So far I have been warming up to it slowly.
In last night’s episode, there is memorable scene involving the show’s most interesting character, the shady tycoon Ace Bernstein played brilliantly by Dustin Hoffman. About two episodes ago Ace was approached by a woman to consider donating to a project involving having convicts take care of retired race horses. Ace decided immediately that he would give her the money because he was attracted to her. When the day arrives for her to pick up the check she’s a no show. Ace is very disappointed. She shows up the following day, apologizes, and offers up an explanation for avoiding him the day before:
I apologize about yesterday. [pause] You make things possible, Mr. Bernstein, and I’ve been afraid for things to be possible.
When she returns home she discovers that Ace has given her far more money than she asked for. $367,000. 376 is his lucky number. I imagine we will find out in coming episodes why she became so pessimistic about life.
It’s something to reflect on. Are you a person who makes things happen or one who is afraid that they will be possible?
People stumble and sometimes fear to try again.I will be checking that show out.
